That scratchproof quality rested on a bold breakthrough in materials. While other brands still used easily marked stainless steel and glass, Rado had turned to extremely hard hardmetal for the case, paired with a sapphire crystal, a combination so hard that everyday knocks and friction leave almost no trace. In that era it was an almost obsessive foresight in materials science: where others thought about "how to look good," Rado thought about "how to still look good ten years from now."

There is a mindset here worth pondering: real durability is a promise to the future. It means that at the very moment a product leaves the workshop, its designer has already thought far ahead for the user, imagining what it will go through, how it will be treated, and how many years on it must still be reliable. This attitude of "being responsible for the long term" is far harder, and far more precious, than a moment of dazzle.

A truly good system or tool should be the same: not merely usable today, but able to withstand years of use, expansion and wear, and remain stable and dependable. The cheapest thing to build is something that works on the first day; the hardest, and the most valuable, is something that still works well on the thousandth. Durability is quiet, unglamorous, and, in the end, it is very often the one thing everyone remembers you for.
