In 1872, Patek Philippe of Geneva shipped its very first watch to a jeweller half a world away, Gondolo & Labouriau in Rio de Janeiro. No one imagined the relationship would last fifty-five years; at its height, this single Rio shop sold close to one-third of Patek Philippe's entire global output.

This was Rio's golden age, capital of the Empire of Brazil, a city lavish enough to rival Paris. Gondolo & Labouriau sold not merely watches but a whole ritual of identity and wealth. They organised the famous "Gondolo Gang," collecting clubs of 180 members each; by 1907 there were fifty-four such clubs across Brazil. Members acquired a watch in a way that looks strikingly modern and financial: instalments, paired with a weekly lottery draw. A single piece then cost roughly a skilled worker's entire annual wage.

This was, in fact, a precocious kind of financial wisdom: taking an expensive, value-holding asset and breaking it into a rhythm one could bear, letting time and discipline do the work of accumulation. In everyday Brazilian slang, "Patek" briefly became the word for "watch" itself, the brand value that only long-term trust can build.

No golden age lasts forever. The global financial storm of the 1930s, compounded by mismanagement, closed the doors of what had once been the world's most prolific watch retailer in 1935. Yet Patek Philippe never forgot that this South American bond had carried it through lean European years. Half a century later, in 1993, the maison revived "Gondolo" as an official collection. The people were gone, the shop was gone, but the value that trust had built stayed, carried down to this day.

Real wealth is never measured by a single transaction, but by vision and patience: the willingness to place a bet far away, where others have not yet looked, and then to spend decades turning it into something that endures.

What Affinity believes in is that same long-horizon vision and discipline: real value takes time to recognise, to cultivate, to compound. Quick gains are easy; it is those who know how to wait, how to hold, and how to entrust an asset to time, who truly come to own the future.
