In Swiss watchmaking, Blancpain has a well-known line: since its founding in 1735, it "has never made a quartz watch, and never will."

The weight of that statement only makes sense against history. In the 1970s the quartz crisis swept the world; countless old houses switched to quartz to survive, and traditional mechanical watchmaking was nearly torn out by the roots. Blancpain chose to go against the tide and make only mechanical watches. Its Villeret collection, named after the small town where the brand began, is the embodiment of that resolve: a rounded, elegant case, clear Roman numerals, a classic moon-phase display, keeping the most traditional watchmaking aesthetic intact.

But note: holding to a core and merely being old-fashioned are two different things. Blancpain did not refuse all change; in movement technology and complications it has in fact been highly innovative. It simply thought clearly about which are the "methods" that can move with the times, and which is the "core" that must never be compromised. What it guarded was the soul of mechanical watchmaking, not the sameness of every detail.

True wisdom is telling the two apart: knowing what to change bravely, and knowing what to hold firmly. Chase only the new and you lose your roots; cling only to the old and you are left behind; those who know how to choose are the ones who go far. The hard part is rarely adopting the new tool; it is having the self-knowledge to name, in advance, the few things you will never trade away, whatever the pressure of the moment.

What YOOV believes in is that same clarity: amid the constant turnover of technology and trends, what matters most is telling apart "tools that can be swapped" from "core values that must be kept." Hold on to what truly matters, and let everything else evolve boldly.
