Grand Seiko has a design code it has followed for half a century, the "Grammar of Design", set out by the designer Taro Tanaka in 1967, prizing mirror-flat, distortion-free surface cutting so that light reflects in its purest form. And in 2020 the brand introduced the "Evolution 9" design language, carrying that classic code one step further.

Evolution 9 did not overturn the past but, standing on its predecessors' foundation, did it finer and better: greater surface flatness, a comfort that fits the wrist more closely, clearer legibility of markers and hands. This is a very Japanese view of progress, not chasing earth-shaking disruption, but believing that "good can be made a little better," and then, on a deep existing foundation, refining and improving continuously, one generation after another.

This is the embodiment of the "kaizen" spirit in Japanese culture: continuous, small, but never-ceasing improvement. It does not worship the romance of "tearing down to start over," but respects all that the past has accumulated and then adds, solidly, on top of it. Over time, these seemingly tiny gains accumulate into a vast gap others struggle to close.

This deep, enduring power of evolution is, in fact, one of the most admirable underlying traits of many Japanese industries and companies. It does not show off, yet is immensely strong, because it has made "progress" a habit woven into daily life, rather than an occasional slogan. To understand this spirit of "continuous evolution" is also key to understanding the long-term competitiveness of the land of Japan.

What Invest Japan believes in is precisely leading people to know and connect with this deep value rooted in Japan, whether in culture, in quality, or in the long-term opportunity behind them. Like Grand Seiko's Evolution 9, the strongest force is often not a momentary disruption, but the focus that continuously makes the good even better.
